近所にスリランカ仏教寺院を建てた
三人の出資者のうち、
今日はお一人がアトリエに来てくださった。
お話を伺ううちに、
かつて奉納した双頭の象とは異なる
四本の牙を持つ新しい象の姿が静かに浮かんだ。
33年間の内戦を越え、
4つの宗教が共に暮らすスリランカ。
その“4”という数が、
象の牙として立ち上がってくる。
そして伝わる 仏歯の物語。
象たちはそれを守り、運び、国を照らす光とされた。
四つの牙で歴史を抱き、
二つの頭で祈りと世界を同時に見つめる象。
今日お越しくださった“お一人”の存在が、
その姿を呼び覚ました。
One of the three founders who funded the
Sri Lankan Buddhist temple in our neighborhood
visited my studio today.
As we spoke,
a new image emerged—
a two-headed elephant with four tusks,
different from the one I once dedicated to a temple.
Sri Lanka carries 33 years of civil conflict
and yet four religions coexist.
That number four rose naturally
as the tusks of this new elephant.
And I recalled the ancient legend
of the Sacred Tooth of the Buddha,
carried and protected by elephants
as a national symbol of light.
An elephant that bears history with four tusks
and watches both the world and prayer with two heads.
The presence of this single visitor
quietly awakened its form today.
